I know what it feels like to have a CV that doesn't tell your whole story. Because mine doesn't either.
My career hasn't been a straight line. It's been a collection of pivots, of learning on the job, of roles in project administration, forensics, and even starting my own business. It's a path shaped by being a multipotentialite, by being neurodivergent, and by the simple reality that sometimes, you have to take the job that pays the bills.
And that's a story so many of us in South Africa share.
A Workforce Out of Sync
After a financial crash, a recession, or a global event like Covid, millions of capable people take whatever work they can find to stay afloat. They become waitresses with degrees, call centre agents with incredible self-taught tech skills, or administrators with a passion for a field they can't break into.
But the hiring system wasn't built for this reality.
It was built for a different time. It filters people based on their last job title, not their true capabilities. It overlooks the soft skills, the transferable skills, and the hard-won knowledge gained outside of a formal qualification. It gets stuck on paper, and in the process, it misses the person.
That's the "why" behind SkillRise Careers. It's my answer to a system that's out of sync with the modern world of work.
